About the instructor

I started playing the violin when I was six years old. I took private lessons, played in ensembles, went to camps, and took group lessons. I continued my studies at McGill University and received a Bachelor of Music degree. I then moved to Ireland to study fiddling through private lessons and going to jam sessions in pubs.

My first teaching experience was during university at a local fine arts education school. From that first teaching experience, I then moved on to teaching programs at other schools at elementary, middle and high school levels. I opened my own private studio in 2002, where I teach mostly private lessons, but have also run a fiddle camp, taught groups lessons, and run various ensembles. I was even recognized as Educator of the Year by Music NB in 2015.

I have taught a large range of ages and love working with all age groups. We learn in different ways at different ages, and it is a lot of fun to explore the struggles of each age group and how to surpass them!

Through the years I have run into many of the same concerns over and over:

Am I too old to learn?

I am happy to say that you are not. I have started students from the ages of 5 to 85 and would be happy to work with older students as well!

I have tried to learn through YouTube, but everything is played so fast!

In my course, I provide MP3s of all of the pieces at various speeds so that you can play along no matter where you are in your progress!

I have been trying to learn by myself, but don’t seem to be able to motivate myself to practice.

Let me tell you, I have also tried going periods without seeing a teacher, or even taking lessons only every other week. It has never worked for me. We need that weekly contact with a teacher and the accountability that it brings to make us practice on a regular basis.

I keep practicing, but am not improving.

Sometimes we get caught up in mindless repetition instead problem solving to figure out what is wrong. In this program I will help you learn how to problem solve so you can work through your challenges and actually improve!

I find the idea of reading sheet music intimidating.

Good news! You don’t necessarily have to learn how to read sheet music to learn how to play the fiddle. I will teach you how to read sheet music if you would like to learn, but will provide you with MP3s of the tunes so that you can listen to them. I will also provide TAB for each of the tunes as well, which gives you the finger positions for each note so that you can play without learning to read music right away, I would be delighted to help guide you in your journey toward learning the fiddle.
