Dear Fellow Fiddler,

Have you ever gone to a jam session and, when someone starts singing, you don't know what to do? Do you feel like you don't know what to play if you aren't playing a fiddle tune?

I understand completely! I always played in orchestras with sheet music, or I played fiddle tunes where I carried the melody. The first time I met up with a guitarist/singer to jam, I had no clue what to do. At first, I learned the melody by ear and simply played it along with him while he sang.

He didn't really know how to explain what I should do, and I didn't know anyone who played fiddle in a band, so I had nobody to ask. I felt kind of useless and was definitely out of my comfort zone!

Eventually, through trial and error, I realized there were patterns, techniques, and simple approaches that made playing behind singers feel much less intimidating.  My goal is to save you the time and frustration of having to figure it all out for yourself.

Introducing "Backup Fiddle Basics"

Here is what I wish someone had told me before I started playing in bands!  This is what we will cover in the course:

  • music theory - keys, and chords
  • bass notes, stepwise motion, neighbour motion
  • playing chords on the fiddle
  • mandolin back-beats
  • rhythmic playing
  • when not to play
  • how to stay out of the singer's way
  • fills
  • common chord progressions
  • reading chord charts

Imagine being able to walk into a jam session and feeling comfortable knowing what to play.  Imagine being able to play along with a song, even if you have never heard it before!  My goal is to help you develop the skills and confidence to play comfortably with singers and other musicians.

Katherine Moller

Award Winning Fiddler & Music Mentor

I started playing the violin when I was six years old. I took private lessons, played in ensembles, went to camps, and took group lessons. I continued my studies at McGill University and received a Bachelor of Music degree. I then moved to Ireland to study fiddling through private lessons and going to jam sessions in pubs.My first teaching experience was during university at a local fine arts education school. From that first teaching experience, I then moved on to teaching programs at other schools at elementary, middle and high school levels. I opened my own private studio 10 years ago, where I teach mostly private lessons, but have also run a fiddle camp, taught groups lessons, and run various ensembles. I was even recognized as Educator of the Year by Music NB in 2015.I have taught a large range of ages and love working with all age groups. We learn in different ways at different ages, and it is a lot of fun to explore the struggles of each age group and how to surpass them!
